תיאור האירוע: SPEAKER: Dr. Harvey Borovetz AFFILIATION: Department of Bioengineering, University of Pittsburgh TITLE: 43 Years on the Faculty at the University of Pittsburgh & 4 Years as a Visiting Lecturer at Ort Braude College --- Lessons Learned ביום שלישי 15.5.18 בשעה 12:50 בחדר VIP Abstract Biomedical Engineering / Bioengineering is one of the fastest growing engineering professions as is reflected by the remarkable growth in numbers of students pursuing biomedical engineering / bioengineering degrees at all levels (1st degree through doctorate) in universities across the United States and Israel. Beginning in 2014 Ort Braude College and the University of Pittsburgh formed a highly productive partnership which has led to the introduction of biomedical engineering / bioengineering coursework and research opportunities to 110 Ort Braude and University of Pittsburgh 1st degree students to date. In what areas of biomedical engineering / bioengineering will our students contribute during their professional careers? During the 15-May seminar, I will attempt to address this question by reflecting on my own professional career at the University of Pittsburgh and as a visiting lecturer at Ort Braude College. The remarkable contributions biomedical engineers / bioengineers have made over the decades to the development of state-of-the-art technology that has benefitted countless patients worldwide will be discussed as will the personal / professional satisfaction of working at the interface between state-of-the art biomedical technology, patients and their physicians (e.g., the clinical interface), including reflections from biomedical engineers and patients. About the speaker Dr. Harvey Borovetz is distinguished professor and former chair (2002-2013) in the Department of Bioengineering, Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and, the Robert L. Hardesty Professor in the Department of Surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After receiving his BA (1st degree) in Physics from Brandeis University in 1969, Dr. Borovetz went on to earn an MS (2nd degree) and PhD (3rd degree), both in bioengineering, from Carnegie Mellon University in 1973 and 1976, respectively. He joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh in January, 1976. Dr. Borovetz's current research interests are focused on the design and clinical utilization of cardiovascular organ replacements for both adult and pediatric patients. Since 1986, Borovetz has served as the academic liaison for the University's Clinical Bioengineering Program in Mechanical Circulatory Support. This program supports patients who are implanted with a left ventricular assist device, or bi-ventricular assist devices, as a bridge to cardiac transplantation or destination therapy. This work in mechanical circulatory support follows Dr. Borovetz's early efforts in which he helped cardiac surgeons apply extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to treat neonates in respiratory distress.

תיאור האירוע: Speaker: Dr. Sergei Lanzat, Technion Title: Pseudo-tropical curves Abstract We consider a generalization of tropical curves, removing requirements of rationality of slopes and integrality and discuss the resulting theory and its interrelations with other areas. Balancing conditions are interpreted as criticality of a certain action functional. A generalized Bezout theorem involves Minkowsky sum and mixed area. A problem of counting curves passing through an appropriate collection of points turns out to be related to the Plucker relations of Grassmanians. We also discuss new recursive relations for this count. This is the joint work with Michael Polyak.
