תיאור האירוע: Yuri's Night - A talk marking the anniversary of the first manned space flight יום שלישי 16.5.17 בשעה 14.40 בכיתה 299D1 Speaker: Dr. Victor Chernov, Department of Mechanical Engineering. On April 12, 1961, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin took off from the Baykonur cosmodrome and became the first human in space. His flight consisted of one orbit around the Earth and lasted a total of 108 minutes, but it opened a new era in the history of mankind. Suddenly, the sky was no longer the limit, but rather space became the final frontier. Since 2001, Gagarin's flight has been celebrated around the world. This lecture is part of the events in Israel. Yuri Gagarin's flight was short, but very quickly the complexity and the duration of the missions increased. The superpowers had a new destination – the Moon, and many missions were flown as a preparation for the journey there. The launch abilities of the 1960s caused the life of cosmonauts and astronauts in space being spartan and crowded, even though the mission times were long Since then the living space available to the astronauts grew and living conditions improved. A great leap forward took place in 1998, with the launch of the first module of the International Space Station. The situation changed fundamentally in two main ways. First, since 1998 there has been international cooperation for human presence in space. Before that there were limited collaborations, but they were the exception, and the space-faring countries tended to work by themselves. Second, the astronauts' working and living conditions have improved drastically (today there is even an espresso machine on the International Space Station). The lecture will focus on the residents of the international station, and how their lives are affected by the limited space and microgravity. How does one eat in microgravity? How do you go to bed? Does microgravity affect the health of astronauts? This and more will be discussed in the talk ============================================================ About the Lecturer: A faculty member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Graduate of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at the Technion, specializing in combustion, propulsion and fluid mechanics. In addition, he is active in the field of popular science, especially in space and science-society relations. The talk will be given in Hebrew
