Creative introduction to mechanical engineering


As the title of the course implies, this is normally the first engineering course that mechanical engineering students take at Braude Collage.
The main two goals of this course are: (A) to introduce the students to the diverse disciplines of the mechanical engineering profession, and (B) to prepare them  students for a successful experience in studying mechanical engineering courses.
 
There are five learning objectives for the students:

  1. To gain an understanding of the Mechanical Engineering profession as well as improving their confidence in studying engineering
  2. To demonstrate teamwork skills
  3. To demonstrate the engineering design process
  4. To practice communications skills (written, oral, and computer), and
  5. To become aware of community-civic responsibility of an engineer.


The students learn the design process through a number of case studies. Team building activities are integrated with exercises of writing and oral communication skills. Assignments are provided as part of the learning experience. Students are expected to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the subject matter through competitions in performing  the assignments.


Student Competition:
Tensegrity structures.
The goal: to achieve maximum height along  with maximum  vertical loading

Student Competition:
To design a mechanism which will pass 20 meters at minimum time
